A student pulling out of DeHority Complex struck an electrical pole with his car late Oct. 19, bringing it down with the live wire attached.

Muncie Police Department and University Police Department closed Riverside Avenue to traffic from New York Avenue to North Martin Street while waiting for the pole to be removed.

Nick Vollmar, patrolman for MPD, said there were no injuries to the student or his passenger, and the car sustained only minor front-end damage.

“[The student] said he was pulling out of the parking lot for [DeHority], and then didn’t realize there was a car coming until it was too late,” Vollmar said. “[He] pulled out, and his buddy fell into him, causing his foot to go onto the gas pedal even more, and he spun out and struck the light pole.”

Vollmar said the other car was not on the scene when he arrived. Either the City of Muncie or American Electric Power will take care of the pole and live wire, he said.
