The Cardinals will play in a total of five tournaments this fall.

While there aren't a lot of teams competing in the tournaments, Ball State head coach Bill Richards said it's important to evaluate new players and see how the returners have improved.

“Our philosophy is to try to take every individual and work on the individual parts of the game so they don’t have any weakness come spring,” Richards said.

Ball State fared OK in its first tournament, with both some individual wins and losses.

Fall tournaments are meant primarily for individual improvement. The team plays a lot of “shoot and duel matches” because duel matches are not allowed in the fall.

Improvement is key for the Cardinals, who are a relatively young team. They have four freshmen and no seniors on the roster this year.

“We’re just kind of seeing where the new guys are fitting in,” Richards said.

The Cardinals are coming off a season in which they ended right at the .500 mark for team wins. With seniors Patrick Elliot and Ray Leonard graduating, the team is left to juniors Andrew Stutz, Matthew Helm, Lucas Andersen and Patrick Downs.

Some could see the Cardinals' youth as a challenge, but Richards sees promise in his young team.

“We just kind of go slow with the freshmen,” Richards said. “They have all shown good potential, just need some experience at the college level.”
