Students and general enthusiasts will have another chance to hone their audio production skills as the fourth annual Central Indiana Audio Student Workshop returns to Ball State on Sept. 12.

Students and general enthusiasts of audio production will have another chance to hone their skills when the fourth annual Central Indiana Audio Student Workshop returns to Ball State on Sept. 12.

The Central Indiana Audio Engineering Society will host the workshop, with special appearances by Edward J. Nixon of the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and several regional bands.

Nixon, who has worked with Drake, Sir Paul McCartney and Nas, is a multiple-Grammy nominee. He will be dispensing advice on creative topics like mixing music, as well as on becoming successful in the industry. He will also be available for conversation, and students may bring their own work for critiquing.

The bands Dream Chief, Flight of the Fallen and Tonos Triad will play as well.

The free conference will offer interactive events useful to those interested in engineering or composing music.

Local producer and DJ Colin Ledbetter, also known as Phlank, said he is looking forward to the discussion on speaker design.

"I've done research with regards to enclosures for things like subwoofers for sound systems," he said. "Beyond that, I'm interested in what they have to say about other types of speakers."

Another focus of the workshop is to provide relevant information to students, which will give them the upper hand in a rapidly advancing technological culture.

Representatives from several local employers will engage in a question and answer session, discussing career opportunities from notables like Interlochen Center for the Arts, a summer school program focused on arts education, and Sweetwater, a massive music retailer based in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Patrick Weaver, a former Ball State student now employed by Sweetwater, will be attending the workshop as a participant, not a representative.

“However, if someone does have questions about Sweetwater, I can do my best to answer them,” he said.

Those interested in attending should register online at eventbrite.com in order to secure a space at the conference. Registering online also enters into a drawing for thousands of dollars' worth of door prizes.

After the conference, workshop attendees can attend a free show at local venue Be Here Now by presenting their workshop badges.
