1. Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj opened the show with her songs “Trini Dem Girls” and “The Night is Still Young." It started off as a typical Minaj performance, complete with elaborate costumes and plenty of back up dancers. Then, Taylor Swift joined Minaj for “The Night is Still Young” and sang a bit of “Bad Blood." It looked like the feuding between the two pop stars was over (when the VMA nominations were first announced, the two engaged in a Twitter feud sparked by MTV shutting Minaj out of the Video of the Year category).

2. The Weeknd

Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, literally brought the fire to the VMA stage with his performance of the smash hit “Can’t Feel My Face." The R&B singer brought passion and energy to the stage. He even got Kanye West on his feet and dancing along to the performance. To no one’s surprise, Taylor Swift danced as well.

3. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato performed her appropriately titled summer anthem, “Cool for the Summer” on the VMA’s outside stage. Lovato’s performance was one of the sexier acts of the night, with plenty of exposed skin from her and her colorfully dressed dancers. The performance lagged when Iggy Azalea came onstage, as the audience could barely hear or understand a word she was saying.

4. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is making headlines once again, but this time it is for his music instead of legal trouble. He performed his new single “What Do You Mean?”and “Where Are U Now,” a song by Diplo and Skrillex that featured Bieber. Bieber’s performance featured lights, dancers and catchy tunes — the perfect recipe for a musical comeback. Bieber’s last VMA performance was in 2010, and he hasn’t released an album since 2012.

5. Twenty One Pilots and A$AP Rocky

This was one of the more interesting collaborations of the night, as both of the featured artists come from different musical backgrounds. Twenty One Pilots performed their songs “Heavy Dirty Soul, “Lane Boy” and “Message Man,” which mixed well with A$AP’s rapping to create a high-energy performance.
