Ball State wins regional game over No. 16 Notre Dame

Shortstop Selena Reyna got things started with a solo home run to lead off the first, and Ball State never looked back as it defeated No. 16 Notre Dame 6-3 in its opening game of the South Bend regional.

It was the Cardinals' first NCAA regional victory in school history.

Notre Dame matched Ball State with a run in the first, but the Cardinals scored five runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away.

The Cardinals outhit the Fighting Irish 10-6 in the game.

Reyna finished 2-3 with two runs at the top of the order. Left fielder Loren Cihlar, second baseman Emily Dabkowski and catcher Shelbie Scamihorn added two hits apiece.

First baseman Sammi Cowger had a two-run home run, and Dabkowski added a two-run triple.

Junior Nicole Steinbach pitched a complete game for Ball State, allowing six hits and striking out three in seven innings. It was her 19th win of the season overall.

With the win, Ball State will return to action at 12 p.m. on May 16 against Kentucky.
