Four Ball State men's volleyball players played their last home match on March 28, suffering a 3-0 loss to Loyola.

Ball State's lineup welcomed back senior outside attacker Shane Witmer, who suffered an ankle injury a couple weeks prior. Head coach Joel Walton also added middle attacker Julian Welsh-White, Matt Sutherland and David Ryan Vander Meer to the lineup.

"Every year it's an emotional thing. It's always difficult to say goodbye to that group," Walton said. "The biggest regret is that we weren't able to send them out with a win, but we knew playing Loyola would be tough."

The first set started with Loyola in control. Although the Cardinals fought back, the Ramblers took the first set 25-19.

The Cardinals maintained a slight lead early in the second set, but the Ramblers prevailed 25-18.

In the third set, Loyola capped off its sweep victory with a 25-17 victory.

With the absence of junior outside attacker Marcin Niemczewski, Mike Scannell and Edgardo Cartagena stepped up on the offensive side.

Scannell finished with six kills, a .176 attack percentage, two digs and three block assists. Cartagena had 13 kills, a .286 attack percentage, an assist, two digs and three block assists.

Defensively, Vander Meer finished with a .909 receiving percentage, two assists and six digs.

Vander Meer said he looks forward to finishing out the season strong heading into postseason.

"We need to come together and have fun. We can't get into our own heads," Vander Meer said. "If we make a mistake, we need to analyze it, find a way to get better and move on."
