Ball State appoints new director of public safety

A new director of public safety has been chosen by the university following last week's finalist interviews.

James A. Duckham, former assistant director of public safety, will serve as the new chief of the Ball State University Police Department, according to a release from the university.

Duchkam took over as acting director in August following the retirement of former UPD Chief Gene Burton. He previously worked for the New York City Police Department and the Greenburgh Police Department in White Plains, New York.

"I believe Chief Duckham is the right person to lead the department and will do an outstanding job," said Alan Hargrave, associate vice president for student affairs and director of housing and residence life in a press release. "He has demonstrated his passion for his work, his enthusiasm for the department and university, and brings a commendable skill set which should benefit Ball State."
