FOOTBALL: Ball State vs. Northern Illinois quarter updates

Fourth Quarter

At the end of the fourth quarter, Northern Illinois defeats Ball State 35-21.

After a 64-yard punt to open the quarter, Ball State started its drive from its own one-yard line. Three runs for 14 yards by Edwards gave the Cardinals a little breathing room to the 15, but Milas threw an interception that Huskies’ cornerback Anthony Brooks returned for a touchdown. After the extra point, Northern Illinois led 28-14.

A 30-yard return by Mabon on the kickoff set up Ball State with good field position on the Cardinals’ 46-yard line. After two runs by Edwards, Ball State had first and 10 on Northern Illinois’s 40. A reverse to Mabon went for 25 yards, and two more runs by Edwards set up first and goal from the four. Banks took the handoff, running into the end zone, and after the extra point, Northern Illinois’s lead was cut to 28-21.

Northern Illinois began its drive on its 25-yard line and ran three times, down to the 45. A five-yard pass from Hare to Turner picked up a first down on third and three, and two plays later Stingily ran for another first. On a third and five from Ball State’s 20, Stingily ran for seven yards, but fumbled after being stripped by David Moore. The Huskies recovered, but two plays later Hare fumbled, this time with Ball State recovering at the Cardinals’ 44.

After two incomplete passes, Milas threw an interception to Ben Compton at midfield.

On second and seven, Stingily ran for 25 yards to Ball State’s 17. Three plays later, Stingily ran untouched for a two-yard touchdown. After the extra point, the Huskies led 35-21.

Banks returned the kickoff to the 25-yard line. Milas completed passes of five and nine yards to Mabon and of 10 to Edwards to set up first down at the Cardinals' 49. On first down, Milas completed a pass to Mabon behind the line of scrimmage, Mabon fumbled and Northern Illinois recovered.

The Huskies would run out the clock.

Third Quarter

At the end of the third quarter, Northern Illinois leads Ball State 21-14.

Ball State received the ball to start the second half, starting at its 20-yard line after a 16-yard return by Edwards. Edwards ran for two yards and Milas completed a pass to Schillings for five, but the Cardinals were forced to punt.

After a 37-yard punt, Northern Illinois started its drive at its 36-yard line. Hare completed a seven-yard pass to Brown on second down, setting up a manageable third and short. A holding penalty pushed the Huskies back 10 yards, but Hare fired a bullet on third down to Turner for 15 yards and moving the chains to their own 48.

A sack by Michael Ayers helped stall Northern Illinois’ drive, and after a fair catch by Hepp, Ball State got the football on its 17-yard line.

On first down, Horactio Banks cut left, running for 17 yards to the 35. After a Milas to Edwards pass completion came up six yards short on third down, the Cardinals were again forced to punt, this time to the Huskies’ 29.

Northern Illinois ran the ball five straight times to open its drive, pounding the ball to its 48-yard line. A nine-yard pass completion from Hare to Turner followed by a seven-yard run moved the Huskies to the Cardinals' 43. A Hare completion for 12 and a Stingily run of 14 helped move the Huskies to the six, and three plays later, Stingily powered the ball into the endzone. After the extra point, Northern Illinois led 21-14.

After a 10-yard return by Edwards on the kickoff, Ball State started its drive from the 14-yard line. Edwards ran for 15 on first down to the 29. A holding penalty caused the drive to stall, and the Cardinals punted on fourth and 18.

Northern Illinois started its drive at the 38, but a sack brought up third and three, and the quarter ended.

Second Quarter

At halftime, Ball State and Northern Illinois are tied at 14.

Northern Illinois punted to start off the second quarter, and Ball State took over on its own two-yard line. Edwards gained seven yards to give his team some breathing room, then gained four more for a first down. A defensive pass interference penalty gave Ball State a first down on its own 31. Williams dropped a pass that would have been a first down, and after the punt, Northern Illinois took over on its own 27-yard line.

Hare found Brown along the sideline for two first downs, but the drive stalled. Ball State took over on its own 25 after the punt. A Williams catch and Edwards run picked up a first down, and a quick slant to Mabon picked up another. Edwards picked up a first down off a screen, and Milas found Williams deep for a 38-yard touchdown. After the extra point, the game was tied at 14.

Northern Illinois started its drive off on its own 22. Martez Hester recovered a fumble on the Northern Illinois 48-yard line, giving the Cardinals possession. Ball State didn’t make much of the turnover as Northern Illinois forced a punt and took over on their own three.

Stingily picked up a first down, but penalties slowed down the Huskies. After a punt, Ball State took over on its own 40. After Edwards ran for four yards, Milas threw two incompletions to end the drive. Northern Illinois took over on its own 14-yard line.

Aaron Taylor sacked Hare on second down, and after a short gain on third down, Northern Illinois punted and Ball State took over on its own 44. Milas hit Corey Lacanaria and then was sacked before being picked off for the first time in his career. Northern Illinois took a knee and the clock expired.

First Quarter

At the end of the first quarter, Northern Illinois leads Ball State 14-7.

Northern Illinois started its first drive off on its own 25-yard line. Tailback Cameron Stingily picked up three yards on the first play, and quarterback Drew Hare found Desroy Maxwell for a first down. He hit Aregeros Turner to move past midfield on the next play and Brian Jones was injured, before finding Chad Beebe for another first down. Hare found Da’Ron Brown for 13 yards, and a defensive pass interference gave Northern Illinois the ball on the Ball State six-yard line. Turner took a handoff the final six yards for the touchdown, and after the extra point, Northern Illinois led 7-0.

The Huskies recovered a muffed kickoff and took over on the Ball State 19-yard line. Hare found Beebe for two yards, and facing third and eight, Eric Patterson made the tackle one yard short of a first down, but also went down with an injury. Stingily took a handoff for a touchdown, and after the extra point, the score was 14-0, Northern Illinois.

Ball State started off its next drive on its own 35-yard line. Quarterback Jack Milas found KeVonn Mabon for a 12-yard gain, and facing third and three, Milas found Jordan Williams to the Northern Illinois 26. Jahwan Edwards took the ball for a gain of four, and after Milas found Williams to the eight, Edwards pounded it in for the touchdown. After the extra point, Northern Illinois led 14-7.

After the Huskies' return, Northern Illinois started off on its own 21. The drive quickly fell apart, and Ball State took over on its own 39-yard line. Milas found Williams on third and long for 15 yards and a first down, but the drive quickly stalled. Northern Illinois took over on its own 18.

Anthony Maddie came in to play quarterback for Northern Illinois. After picking up a first down, Maddie found Brown for 14 yards. The drive fell apart, and after the punt, Ball State took over on its own three. The Cardinals didn’t make any progress, punting the ball away to the Huskies, who took over on the Ball State 42-yard line.

Hare re-entered the game, and after a Northern Illinois short drive, the quarter ended.
