The Ball State women’s volleyball team won a five-set thriller over Eastern Michigan Oct. 3 at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals improved to 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play.

“To win it in front of the home crowd is exactly what we needed to happen,” head coach Steve Shondell said.

Ball State played its most complete defensive match of the season, holding Eastern Michigan to a .175 attack percentage. The Cardinals held Eastern Michigan’s top hitter Stacy Perinar to eight kills on 49 attacks.

The Cardinals had five blocks in the match, led by redshirt freshman Sabrina Mangapora with two solo rejections.

Junior Kati Vasalakis got the start at the libero position. She had 24 digs for Ball State. Nikki Box added 19 in the match.

“We weren’t nearly as sharp offensively as we were last weekend, but our defense was 100 percent better, and our passing and serving was 100 percent better,” Shondell said. “It’s interesting how those things can swing from week to week."

Offensively, Ball State received significant contributions from the middles for the second consecutive match. Kelly Hopkins led the team with 17 kills, while Hayley Benson had 14.

Mangapora had big offensive plays down the stretch, and she finished with 12 kills.

Setter Jenna Spadafora was two assists shy from a career high, as she finished with 58 on the night. She also recorded five kills and nine digs.

The Cardinals hit .178 as a team with 68 total kills.

Ball State now owns a record of 8-8 after the victory. The Cardinals return home Oct. 4 as they host Central Michigan in MAC play.
