The Ball State soccer team defeated Kent State 1-0 on Sunday, snapping a two-game losing streak and keeping pace in the Mid-American Conference.

In previous matches, the Cardinals had been unable to equal their opponents’ physicality, but head coach Craig Roberts liked what he saw from his team against the Golden Flashes.

“We went out with a game plan, and the girls stuck to it,” Roberts said. “We matched them physically, and the girls looked like they were a championship team.”

While Ball State struggled on offense, managing only seven shots on goal compared to Kent State’s 17, the team played lockdown defense throughout. Freshman Alyssa Heintschel made her first game of the season at goalkeeper, recording seven saves and earning her first solo shutout of her collegiate career.

The Cardinals’ lone goal came on a corner kick from in the 34th minute. Sophomore Leah Mattingly sent the ball into the box and senior Victoria Jacobs headed it in for the score. It was Jacobs’s first goal of the season and seventh of her career.

With the win, Ball State moves to 7-4-2 (3-3 in the MAC) and remains tied for third in the West division with Western Michigan. Ball State returns home this weekend, hosting Western Michigan at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. Sunday.
