The Ball State soccer team dropped its first home match of the season on Sunday, falling 0-3 to Toledo.

Coming off a 2-0 victory over Central Michigan on Friday, the Cardinals were looking to keep the momentum going against a Rockets squad who entered on a six-game losing streak.

Once the match started, however, momentum firmly went to Toledo, who took a 1-0 lead at the six-minute mark off a kick deflected into the goal off of Ball State’s Cailey Starck.

The Rockets continued to surge ahead with the momentum, taking a 2-0 lead off a goal from Kiersten Johnson.

At halftime, Ball State head coach Craig Roberts decided to switch goalkeepers, replacing sophomore Brooke Dennis with freshman Alyssa Heintschel.

“We felt [Heintschel] was due some play, and with the wind going away from the goal we felt that her longer kick would give us more chances on the offense,” Roberts said.

The switch didn’t create the offensive spark Roberts was looking for, as the Cardinals failed to score while the Rockets added another goal to its lead, winning 3-0.

Ball State was shutout for the first time since facing Purdue on Aug. 29.

“It was a very physical game, and we came out and were just unable to match up with that physicality, something we will work on,” Roberts said.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 6-3-2 overall, and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Next weekend, the Cardinals travel for a pair of road matches against Ohio (5-6, 2-1 MAC) on Friday and Kent State (7-3-2, 2-1-1 MAC) on Sunday.
