For the sixth year out of seven years performing, Outlet Dance Troupe won the overall award at Air Jam Oct. 9.

“We practice really hard,” said President Morgen Figel. “We feel like we have a name to live up to, and so we really bring it.”

Though the group won before, Figel said winning again felt “amazing.”

“I’m so proud of our team right now,” she said.

Twenty-one groups and two exhibition groups performed in the lip sync and dance contest, all keeping with this year’s Homecoming theme “Cardinal Strong.”

Lambda Chi Alpha and Pi Beta Phi won the Greek category, and the runner-up was Alpha Kappa Alpha and Phi Kappa Psi.

Dehority won the residence hall category and was the only one who competed in that category.

Outlet won the independent category, and Black Student Association was the runner-up.

For the past two years, Air Jam has sold out John R. Emens Auditorium, and this year was not any different. The tickets sold out a week after they went on sale.

The popularity of the event was evident with the energy that bounced through Emens.

A half-hour before performances began, sorority and fraternity chapters yelled their chapters' chants, trying to drown out the music playing from the speakers above.

Some spectators stood on chairs, all trying to out-yell each other and have their chant heard above the rest. They came with their faces painted and their shirts decorated, and all the groups were in matching shirts so everyone would know whom they were supporting.

This year's event was freshman pre-business major Megan Curich’s first Air Jam, and she said the energy level was crazy. She came with her sisters from Alpha Gamma Delta, who were seated in the front of the auditorium and were up out of their seats, dancing to the music almost the whole time.

“I love music and it’s so much fun with all the dancing,” Curich said. “I like to get up and dance with them.”

The popularity of the event was not only evident at Ball State, however. The emcees encouraged the crowd to tweet using the hashtag #bsuairjam, and around 10:30 p.m., it started trending in the Indianapolis area. Ten minutes later, it started trending in the U.S.

At the end of the night, Homecoming king and queen were announced. Wesley Crouch and Kayzie Priebe from College Mentors for Kids won king and queen.
