Greek organizations host annual Waterdaze

Students cooled off at LaFollete field for the 24th annual Waterdaze event on Aug. 23.

Hosted by Alpha Gamma Delta and Theta Chi, Waterdaze raised money for the United Service Organizations and the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, which raises awareness for diabetes. Last year, they raised almost $6,500 to benefit Riley Children’s Hospital.

There were six water-related events for the teams to complete, including an inflatable obstacle course and a water balloon toss. For other events, participants ran a water balloon back and forth without hands, filled up containers by carrying a bucket of water on a helmet and attempted to avoid being hit with wet sponges.

The winning team received tickets to the Dierks Bentley concert.

Students could also dunk their friends in a dunk tank for a $1 donation.

Faythe Mayer, a junior in Delta Zeta, came to support her best friend, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. She said her favorite part of the day was dunking her friend into the tank.

“It was great,” Mayer said. “All the money is going towards philanthropy, and I think that’s awesome.”

Diabetes hits close to home for Katie Haney, philanthropy chair for Alpha Gamma Delta. Several members of her family have the disease.

“I wanted to raise awareness for [diabetes] and really get all my sisters involved [so that it] will be special to them too,” Haney said.

Planning the event took months, said Joshua Rooney, event coordinator for Theta Chi.

“We had to coordinate with Ball State administration,” Rooney said. “There was some policy changes being proposed that would have prohibited us [from using] LaFollette field … we had to work with the Recreation Center, event staff and all the vendors that we had.”

Both Haney and Rooney anticipated the event would be a success. More than 60 teams had signed up prior to the event, and more signed up that day.

Many of the students enjoyed the combination of fundraising and various activities.

“We’re here to support the philanthropy because it’s a good fundraiser, and we like to give back to the community,” said Natalie Burren, a senior in Alpha Gamma Delta.

For Jessica Lyle, a junior in Delta Zeta, Water Daze provided the opportunity to see some of her fellow greeks for the first time this semester.

“We’re back to school and we’re excited to see everyone,” Lyle said.

Jack Hesser, a junior in Lambda Chi Alpha, said he enjoys going to greek philanthropies in general.

“I think greek philanthropies are a really great way to give back, and [allow] us to help Theta Chi and Alpha Gamma Delta raise money for their philanthropies.”
