MEN'S TENNIS: Six players recognized for classroom work

For the Ball State men’s tennis team, performance in the classroom is as important as it is on the court.

After earning a 3.691 GPA, Ball State's team was one of only two Mid-American Conference schools to be named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-Academic Team.

The program also received six individual ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades, with graduate Austin Smith (3.637), seniors Patrick Elliot (3.667) and Ray Leonard (3.733), and sophomores Lucas Andersen (3.821), Matt Helm (4.000) and Andrew Stutz (3.966) being awarded for their hard work.

The team, which does not have any freshmen on its roster this year, will use experience to improve upon last season's 14-11 record. An NCAA tournament loss to No. 12 Illinois should add motivation, as Ball State will look to recapture the effort that helped lead the team there.

Ball State opens the fall Sept. 12, when the team travels to Wisconsin to participate in the Milwaukee Classic.
