Those in favor still hopeful as mariage ban moves to general assembly soon

This afternoon, the Interfaith Coalition on Non-Discrimination, made up of Indiana clergy members spoke at the Indiana Statehouse against House Joint Resolution 6, which would define marriage as strictly between a man and a woman, and write that definition into the state’s constitution.

ICON, along with Ball State’s University Senate, stand with Freedom Indiana, a bipartisan organization formed to oppose HJR6.

University Senate expressed their support of Freedom Indiana’s goals in the statement they passed at their meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14.

ICON delivered a letter to the representatives, expressing their reasons for opposing HJR6 citing religious liberty and civil rights.

“Our views on marriage differ. But we speak with one voice to oppose amending the Indiana Constitution to define marriage,” the letter said. “Each of our faith traditions emphasizes justice. For our society to be just, the civil rights of all people, even those with whom we may disagree, must be protected.”

The letter expressed the group’s view that discrimination should not be written into the state constitution. It was signed by more than 300 faith leaders across the state.
