Ball State students celebrate Hispanic culture

The Daily News

More than 250 people celebrated Hispanic culture Friday at the Latino Student Union’s annual Fiesta on the Green.

While rain moved the event from outside of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center to inside the ballroom, organizers said they were still pleased with the crowd. The University Program Board also helped host the event with LSU.

Fiesta on the Green represents the closing of a week of events LSU has had to celebrate Hispanic heritage month, said Jovan Rodriguez, LSU vice president.

“We like to promote Latino culture here on campus and help Latino students, which means bringing everyone together, like a family,” Rodriguez said.

The event was open to the public.

“I think its cool and interesting to have multicultural organizations," Ximena Mellado, a junior architecture major, said. "It allows everyone to meet new people."

While some came out to meet new people, other students attended for a new experience.

“It gives you a different outlook and perspective of the people on campus and of a different culture," Joi Fortson, a sophomore business major, said. "You really don’t know unless you experience it.”

Liyah Owens, a sophomore advertising major, said she liked seeing all the diversity on campus.

"LSU helps diversify campus as a whole — it’s not just whites and blacks," she said. "There are Latinos, as well as Indian, Native American, Asian and many others."

The Fiesta on the Green served Tex-Mex style food and a DJ provided a variety of Latin music. Attendees also had a chance to take a couple swings at piñatas.

This is the first year the UPB has worked with LSU in organizing this event. UPB program coordinator Megan Rogers said UPB was looking into throwing a fiesta and got in touch with LSU.

Rogers said both organizations help each other and the event was good to reach students and expand their horizons.
