WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State opens spring with win

The Ball State women’s tennis scored two wins in its spring opener doubleheader Saturday to start the season 2-0. 


In the morning session, Ball State defeated in-state rival IUPUI 6-1, only losing in the No. 1 singles. 


Sophomore Courtney Wild defeated IUPUI’s Bobbi Modesto 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Freshman Courtney Earnest won No. 3 singles for Ball State by defeating Vanessa Whyte 6-4, 6-2. 


Ball State also got wins from junior Kristel Sanders, freshman Bethany Moore and sophomore Ashlyn Rang in the singles events. The only singles loss for Ball State came for freshman Ayaka Terashi when she lost to Shelby Hullett. 


The Cardinals swept the doubles competition of the match against the Jaguars. The pairs of Terashi and Earnest; Wild and Moore; and Sanders and senior Lauren Pickrel all secured wins in the doubles matches. 


Ball State won its afternoon match against Chicago State 6-1 as well and in similar fashion to the morning match. The team’s only loss against Chicago State was in No. 1 singles again when Terashi fell to Karyn Emeralda 6-4, 6-0. 


Wild, Earnest, Sanders, Moore and Pickrel all won their singles events against Chicago State. Wild won her match against Carynne Lloyd 6-0, 6-1 and Pickrel defeated Mia Townsell 6-0, 6-0. 


The team swept the doubles competition again, with the closest match being with the pair of Terashi and Earnest won 7-3. 


The wins against IUPUI and Chicago State, Ball State coach Christine Bader has now led her team to win in the spring opener for the second consecutive season since she arrived three years ago. 


Ball State will compete again at 11 a.m. Jan. 26 with a home match against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
