Hide the rug because participants in this semester's Works in Motion plan to cut a few Friday evening.
Works in Motion has been presented by the Ball State Dance Department since 1987, and it is an important event for dancers from Ball State to highlight their talents and abilities for the public to witness.
"This is a higher opportunity, so students can show anything they want to, in any style," assistant dance professor Sarah Mangelsdorf said.
Pieces the dancers present may range from contemporary music, such as hip-hop, to older works, such as ballet, Mangelsdorf said. There are no exemptions; anything can be chosen, as long as it is the desire of the performers.
Rachel Brown, a senior dance major, has been hard at work with the choreography for the show, and she said she thinks all of the hard work she and the other students have put in will pay off. Brown started choreographing during her sophomore year and has been involved in Works in Motion since Spring 2011. In addition to the choreography she has been doing, she will be doing a solo performance.
"I love these student shows," Brown said. "Ball State is a safe place for the opportunity to take my artwork and ... experiment with it."
For the typical trio, it took Brown three hour-and-a-half rehearsals for the performers to finish learning their parts. For her own solo act, it only took a few hours in one day to learn her movements.
Blake Scheidenberger said he is anticipating his chance to present his art, even though he is not majoring in dance or theater. Scheidenberger is a sophomore history major.
"It's a positive thing, and it's a great way for students to express their art form," Scheidenberger said. "I've done the past three showcases, and I was really happy with the work."
For those that have still not decided whether they want to attend or not, Sheidenberger said, "It's a great way to support, young up-and-coming artists."
The show begins at 6 p.m. at the Korsgaard Dance Studio in room 213 at Ball Gymnasium. The show will feature at least seven acts, Brown said.
The event is $1 for general admission. Available seating will include bleachers and floor mats.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the dance department to help bring in guest artists and to aid student needs in the department.
