LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Creative investments for today's economy

I hopped up out the bed, and turned my swag on. Swag the epitome of cool. You either got it or you don't. Jay-Z and Lil Wayne rap about it. Nike puts it on shirts. Not to mention have to be on lookout for those swagger-jackers. It's all about having that swag. However the swag I'm talking about is a different type. I'm talking about the new terminology in finance. Swag stands for silver, wine, art, and gold. With a down economy, the Federal Reserve has attempted to stabilize it with quantitative easing, which is when central banks buy up financial assets to inject a predetermined amount of money into an economy. This floods the economy with new money. This new money causes inflation and that causes the value of the dollar to diminish. Investors are turning away from the fiat currencies of the world, they are turning to swag.

Silver has risen almost 700% over the last two decades. When I was born in 1989, silver was floating around $5 an ounce, currently it is fluctuating above $34 an ounce. With industrial uses and rising demand, silver is set go up.

Wine is not only a delicious beverage, it is a great investment. Wine has been used in trade for centuries. Rare wines have done well over the years, with many financial institutions investing in these grape concoctions.

Art is the most ambiguous investment of all. It's to define art, but the elites of the world have collected vast amounts for viewing pleasures and financial gain. The art market is a volatile market, however done well over the recent years.

Gold, otherwise known as wealth insurance is a must have in any investor's portfolio. In October of 2002 gold was trading under $400 an ounce. As of October 2012, it is trading above $1700 an ounce. That's over a 400% increase. With central banks around the world producing stimulus, predictions are for a rise in the gold price.

If you want to make some money during these volatile times, do as the rappers do and turn your swag on!
