Ball State students are moving on to the big screen as their film has been selected for the Heartland Film Festival.

"Stories and Legends: Historic Preservation in Muncie, Indiana" is a documentary created by a group of students showcasing the efforts of preservations and restoring structures of famous places in the Muncie area such as Whitney Hospital (where bank robber John Dillinger stayed), Over House (former headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan) and other locations.

The film also won an Aurora Award for Platinum Best of Show in May.

"I wanted to find the most alluring, almost mysterious locations possible," said Christen Whitney, co-director and producer of the film. "We looked for locations with the quirkiest stories. The ultimate goal was to make the history of Muncie appealing and mysterious as well as making people curious."

Whitney and three other students worked together to put this production together as a part of Ball State's Historic Muncie Project, an immersive learning program created in Fall 2011.

"I wanted the students to have a powerful framework to connect history, community development and preservation with visual storytelling," said Chris Flook, project director and creator of the program.

The students had a part in creating the Historic Muncie Project as they were responsible for creating the website. Students have contributed hundreds of photos, maps and shorter and longer documentaries of Heartland.

"During this 2012 iteration, students are producing four more documentaries and taking more photos," Flook said.

"Stories and Legends" will be shown four times in Indianapolis during the 10-day festival.

"I hope the viewers not only gain a respect for the beauty of the city's older areas, but also remain interested though out the production," Whitney said. "My hope is that because this is a factual piece that has been given an emotional and dramatic spin the audience will be very engaged."
