Ball State is set to begin its fall season despite injured sophomore Ashlyn Rang.
Rang is forced to sit out this weekend after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer on her right elbow as the cardinals host 10 teams in this year's Ball State Fall Invitational.
"They said about six months recovery," said Rang. "I'm able to dry swing right now without a tennis ball, so hopefully on my next check-up I can start using foam tennis balls."
Rang will miss three more months in order to fully recover from her offseason surgery.
Head coach Christine Bader says the team is thrilled to be hosting Chicago State, Cleveland State, University of Dayton, Illinois State, IPFW, IUPUI, Louisville, Miami of Ohio, Valparaiso and Wright State University in this year's tournament.
The team will see many of the teams competing this weekend in the spring as well.
Ball State is hard at work to improve after the team finished the season 7-16 and were defeated in the second round of the MAC tournament.
"We just have to refocus in on new things that we need to work on because it's going to be different every year, We have to figure out what our weak points are and work on those and hopefully do well," said Rang.
The fall season gives the team a chance to get ready for the spring season and can be compared to a preseason in other sports.
"The fall is more individualized," said Rang "So I think our biggest focus on court is trying to get our games back up as a team and getting used to having each other there.'
Last season Ball State started the season 4-0 before falling off towards the end of the season.
The season will kick off on Friday with the invitational beginning at 9 a.m. at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
