Mitt Romney seems like the sort of guy who would take things too far.
And it's clear that he has, if his campaign has shown anything in these past few weeks.
I get it, not everyone is perfect. We all have slip-ups.
Though, Romney's unfortunate mess-ups have been a little like watching someone fall down an endless upward-moving escalator. Totally painful, hilarious and upsetting.
In a Florida fundraiser in May, Romney was recorded saying 47 percent of Americans don't pay taxes and believe they are entitled to extensive government support, according to an Associated Press article. The Republican presidential candidate said, "My job is to not worry about those people."
Mother Jones posted the video Sept. 17 and all I could do was shake my head.
The could-be president said it isn't his job to worry about nearly half of Americans.
Brilliant. That's how you run a country, just completely ignore most of the citizens.
And then, just two days after the video was released, Romney appeared on a forum for Univision, a Spanish-language television network.
He tried to do some damage control over the video and talked about immigration issues. Unfortunately, the poor dude looked a little too orange. He reminded me of some people on campus who, in the winter, will apply some bronzer to fool people about where we actually live.
That was just awkward and, well, slightly racist. I'd like to think Romney didn't go on screen with the intention of doing a "brownface," but you'd think someone would stop him and say he looked absolutely ridiculous. Or maybe they just want to go down with the Romney ship.
And in continuing his fall down the upward-moving escalator, Romney said possibly the most hilarious thing I've heard while he spoke at a Beverly Hills fundraiser Saturday.
According to an article by the Los Angeles Times, Romney's wife, Ann, had to make an emergency landing on the way to Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday due to an electrical malfunction. At the fundraiser, Romney talked about how he was glad she was safe and how worrisome a fire on an aircraft can be.
"And you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open," he said. "I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem. So it's very dangerous."
I hope he was kidding.
Maybe he was just overwhelmed about how worried he was for his wife, it can be terrifying.
How can windows not opening on planes be dangerous? This isn't a convertible. I've always wanted to stick my head out of the window on an airplane, far above the tiny ground. I imagine it would be a greater feeling than when you do that on a highway.
Wait. There's a reason they don't allow you to crack the window for some chill breeze.
Don't get me wrong, President Barack Obama has had his slips, too, and it seems like I sigh most of the time whenever Vice President Joe Biden is mentioned.
But Romney really needs to get his act together. Do we want someone who has so many slips of the tongue to be at the helm of this country?
Can you imagine what he could potentially do to the diplomacy? This isn't even about his politics so much as it is about how bad it would be if he keeps making these blunders.
We not only need a president who is well-informed and makes the decisions that we agree with, but we need one who knows when to shut up.
In my opinion, Romney doesn't have that filter.
