Study abroad fair held in Atrium

Students gathered around several different cultural booths, learning about different countries at the study abroad and passport fair Wednesday in the Atrium.

The Rinker Center for International Programs organizes the fair, which is held twice a year. The office offers 300 international programs for students.

John Jensen, director of study abroad, said studying abroad gives students a chance to experience the world around them but also gives them the opportunity to learn about other cultures.

"When you step into another culture, you are stepping into a new decision-making process," Jensen said. "In the states, you learn a certain way of doing things, a certain way of accomplishing things. When you step overseas, you have different cultures with new ways and ideas."

The fair also had a passport booth for students to fill out a passport application.

"I'm excited that I learned more about the program and scholarship options I will have with studying abroad," junior visual communications major Caitlin Cambron said.

Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships, said every student should take the opportunity to study abroad.

"The fair gives students a chance to see the full array of different study abroad opportunities," Stedman said. "Students can also learn about the programs available for them, including scholarships and financial aid assistance."

The Ball State Credit Union also helps students with studying abroad.

"We open new accounts for students," said Chris Poland, Ball State Credit Union associate. "They will get a debit card that will be activated, so they can use it for whatever country they are going to be studying in for the semester."

Jensen said every student should study abroad, but it is up to each individual student if it is right plan for them.

"I would love to see students take advantage of all the programs available to them," Jensen said. "There are so many programs for students here, and I think that many are unaware of the opportunities that the campus offers."

For sophomore Japanese major Jessica Allen, coming to the fair was a great experience to learn more about studying abroad.

"I think that studying abroad gives students really great opportunities of experiencing a different culture while you are in school," Allen said. "It can really open up your views of the world. It is a great experience and it looks good on your r+â-¬sum+â-¬."
