Kent State didn't miss a beat on its first drive of the third quarter against Ball State. After four plays, Kent State quarterback Spencer Keith found a wide-open Matt Hurdle in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The play capped off a four-play drive that didn't last two minutes.
Needing to respond with a touchdown of its own, Ball State got the needed touchdown when quarterback Keith Wenning found wide receiver Willie Snead for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The score cut Kent State's lead to 28-19. Steven Schott's PAT attempt was missed, adding onto to the mistakes by Ball State in the game.
Ball State forced a three-and-out on Kent State on its next possession and started its next offensive drive at its own 46.
The offense took advantage of the field position as Wenning threw his third touchdown of the game. His third touchdown pass was to wide receiver Connor Ryan from 13-yards out, and cut the Kent State lead to 28-26 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter.
Kent State was able to avoid a second consecutive three-and-out on a 24-yard pass play to Tim Erjavec. Three plays later, Archer recorded his second touchdown reception of the game to extend his team's lead to 35-26.
