With Ball State now preparing for its Saturday matchup against Big Ten opponent Indiana, there are notes to make for the upcoming game.
New face at quarterback for Indiana
Indiana was able to dominate new Mid-American Conference member Massachusetts 45-6 in Week 2, but it came at an expense. Sophomore quarterback Tre Roberson suffered an ugly broken leg in the beginning of the second quarter and is done for the season. Indiana's Kevin Wilson will now turn to Cameron Coffman, who transferred in from Arizona Western College, to lead his offense.
In the nearly three quarters of action he got in the win against the Minutemen, Coffman finished 16-of-22 passing for 159 yards and one touchdown. For having to come off the bench unexpectedly after Roberson's injury, it was a decent game for him going by those numbers.
But then again, he was going up against a defense that's new to the FBS level this year.
Keith Wenning still without a touchdown pass in 2012
After throwing 19 touchdown passes in 2011, Wenning has still yet to throw a touchdown pass after two games in 2012. All seven of Ball State's touchdowns this season have come from the ground and from three different players.
Indiana does have an improved defense from 2011, but it would be hard to imagine Wenning doesn't throw a touchdown on Saturday. But if Ball State gets its third consecutive win over Indiana without a passing touchdown, Wenning probably won't care.
Ball State defensive end returns from suspension
Following an arrest for a drug charge before the beginning of the season, defensive end Jonathan Newsome was suspended and missed the first two games of the season.
Newsome will return to the lineup for the game against Indiana and should get the start to put Ball State's defensive line at full strength. And Newsome's return couldn't come at a better time for the Cardinals.
The defense has yet to record a sack after games against Eastern Michigan and Clemson and really haven't put much pressure on opposing quarterbacks all season. With his size and speed, Newsome should at least be able to put pressure on Indiana's Coffman on Saturday night.
First time in Bloomington, Ind., since the 2008 season
The last time Ball State played at Indiana was the year the team went a perfect 12-0 through the regular season. Led by quarterback Nate Davis, Ball State went on to beat Indiana 42-20 and improve its record to 4-0 that season.
But that game has been overshadowed by the scary injury former Ball State wide receiver Dante Love suffered in second quarter of Ball State's win. On a swing pass to the right side, Love cut outside and was hit by Indiana safety Chris Adkins in a head-to-head collision that left Love motionless on the field.
The diagnosis was a cervical spine fracture, and Love's football career was over.
Four years later, the Cardinals return to Bloomington with hopes for a repeat result on the scoreboard from 2008, but more importantly, to not have anything repeat like what happened to Love in the game.
