The time has come to "bust" out at Ball State University for a good cause.

Ball State's largest philanthropy will be celebrating and raising money for two organizations Saturday at LaFollette field. Registration will begin at 10:15 a.m. with the festivities starting at 11 a.m.

This year marks the 40th annual Watermelon Bust for the sorority Alpha Chi Omega and the fraternity Delta Tau Delta. Chairman of Delta Tau Delta, Josh King, encourages everyone, greek or not, to come.

"It's our 40th annual [bust], so it's been a long time running, and we try to take pride in it, being Ball State's largest philanthropy," King said. "It's kind of our baby, so we make sure it's a big deal."

Each greek organization will be splitting the proceeds to donate to the American Red Cross and A Better Way.

Tug-of-war, relay races and obstacle courses are a few of the events that will be taking place. King was excited to announce that Jimmy John's and Red Bull will be entertaining throughout the afternoon.

"[The Watermelon Bust] goes for a great cause," King said. "It should be a good time. It has a great history and we expect it to be really big this year."

Alpha Chi Omega President Erika Hess said the Watermelon Bust is a historic event and to celebrate the 40th annual, there are a few new things to look forward to this year. Hess said there will be a speaker from the organization, A Better Way, which is the organization Alpha Chi Omega is supporting.

"I think we really just want to promote victims of domestic violence, as much as possible," Hess said. "That's what Alpha Chi Omega supports nationally."

Hess is hoping for a large turnout to show their support for A Better Way.

"It's really nice because [domestic violence] actually affects people our age," Hess said. "Being able to actually promote that and spread awareness because [domestic violence] is so common is a really great opportunity for us to take advantage of."

Hess said this year's bust has been promoted differently and alumni have been invited to attend.

There are trophies and gifts to be awarded to the winning teams, which is a first for the event.

The greek organizations encourage everyone to attend the event even if just for support, and donations will be accepted all afternoon.

"[The Watermelon Bust] is really fun and unique," Hess said. "It just kind of gets the whole community together, whether you're Greek or not."
