Student media organizations hold fair to inform and attract new members

The annual SuperParty will take place tonight from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Building, the Ball Communication Building and the David Letterman Communications and Media Building.

The party will help familiarize students with Ball State's student media organizations and encourage them to join.

Lori Byers, assistant dean of the College of Communications, Information, and Media, said the event is important because it helps students get as much experience as possible in today's tough and competitive job market.

"The goal of our college is to provide the equivalent of two years work experience beyond the classroom so that our students are instinctive upon graduation," Byers said. "We have close to 40 student organizations in our college alone that provide students the opportunity to receive this experience."

WCRD News Director Payne Horning is looking forward to playing music in the lobby of the Letterman Building and raffling off prizes while meeting new students.

"As news director, I'll be campaigning to find aspiring journalists in all fields who are wanting to increase their experience and add to their r+â-¬sum+â-¬ and gain practical experience in journalism," Horning said. "Just hang on, you can get to the food, but first check out WCRD and check out what we have."

One of the perks of traveling through CCIM is the free pizza, but Kevin Thurman, of Sports Link, said he wants students to know what Sports Link can do for their college experience.

"No other school in the nation can touch what we have here and I think it's really important that students take advantage of that and all the great organizations that are in the College of Communication, Information, and Media," Thurman said "It's all about getting involved and help show that by the time you graduate, you're prepared for a job in the real world."

While some student organizations are sharing information on what they're about and how they can get involved, student magazine Ball Bearings wants to get students involved as they transition into new departments said Lauren Hardy, managing editor for print at Ball Bearings.

"We're adding a student life section that's going to focus on entertainment and music and food trends, and we haven't had that before," Hardy said. "We're also manipulating some of the older departments we used to have into newer categories."

Much like the raffle WCRD will be holding for prizes, CCIM will be having its own contest. Students can tweet a photo or their favorite CCIM student organization at #SuperParty from the event and be entered into a door prize drawing.

Students are encouraged to come out to the event and find out what different organizations have to offer such as WCRD, Sports Link, Ball Bearings, the Ball State Daily News and Cardinal Communications to name a few.

"I ran into a [telecommunications] student the other day in Lowe's, he's a freshman, and he said 'I would really like to job shadow someone,' and I corrected him and I said 'Oh, we don't job shadow in our college. You do the job in our college,' and that's what makes you an instinctive graduate," Byers said.
