State excise officers issue more than 50 citations during first weekend

Before the start of fall classes, Indiana State Excise Police officers issued more than 50 citations during Friday and Saturday night at Ball State.

Most of the citations were for illegal consumption of alcohol, with additional tickets for possessing a false ID and traffic violations.

Two adults were also cited for providing alcohol to a minor.

On Friday night, 19 people were cited on 32 charges while 15 minors were cited on 19 charges Saturday night.

According to an earlier Daily News report, last year Ball State had 93 such citations.

"Young adults entering college and beginning their lives beyond the high school years is expected to be an exciting time," Matt Strittmatter, superintendent for the Indiana State Excise Police, said in a press release. "It is our responsibility to ensure that freshmen begin their college experience safely and within the confines of the law, which means that we will continue to make certain that the accessibility of alcohol to underage students is minimized for their safety as well as the community as a whole."

Ball State was not the only Indiana university to see citations before the start of the Fall Semester. Indiana University had 258 citations between Wednesday and Saturday, with four people taken to the hospital for high levels of intoxication.

Notre Dame had 32 citations on its campus over the course of the weekend.

The excise police focuses on alcohol, tobacco and similar violations. The Intensified College Enforcement program is the primary focus of the excise police, aiming to reduce underage consumption at six college campuses, including the three that had a high number of citations during move-in weekend.
