Muncie RibFest changes date to attract students

Ribs, desserts and music will fill the streets of downtown Muncie this weekend for the RibFest.

Instead of holding the event during the first weekend of August, the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership moved the event's time and place to get more participants for the 14th annual MAX Muncie RibFest.

"We've moved this event, in part, for the students to get out into the Muncie community," said Downtown Development Program Coordinator Cheryl Crowder. "It's a great way to introduce yourself."

The two-day event will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. A two-day pass is available for $5, while children 10 and younger get in for free.

Not only will this event be serving lots of ribs, but there will be vendors offering desserts and side dishes. Of the 15 expected vendors, not all will have food. Some vendors will have crafts and some community businesses will be downtown, too.

According to a press release, HD Superrent and Special Occasion will present a free Kiddie Square, the Magic Box Theatre will sponsor a kids' "Elvis Impersonator Contest" and Texas Roadhouse will host a Dr. Feelgood Karaoke Contest for kids and adults. A car show hosted by Toys Forever Models and Hobbies will include customs, classics, hot rods and motorcycles. Triple S Outdoors will have the newly-introduced Archery Tag, which is paintball with a bow.

The Downtown Muncie website also said a stage will be set up in Canan Commons and will feature a number of music genres, such as bluegrass, rock and blues, as well as dancers on the Rolling Rock Stage. Another stage, the FM Music Stage, will host to both local and regional talent, as well as play some radio favorites.

For Ball State students interested in attending RibFest, the MITS Trolley will transport people to and from campus on Saturday and Sunday. The trolley will stop in the Village and on Riverside Avenue.
