Multicultural Center hosts annual welcome back picnic

The Multicultural Center will host the annual Welcome Back Picnic to offer incoming and returning students an opportunity to socialize with several multicultural student organizations on campus.

Students can enjoy free food, music and conversation at the night event from 4-6 p.m. Friday on the L.A. Pittenger Student Center front lawn.

"This is an annual event sponsored by the Multicultural Center for several years now to help welcome new and returning students on campus," said Clifton Snorte, assistant director of the Multicultural Center. "There are usually a couple hundred students who show up every year to this annual event."

The idea of hosting an event like this one originally came from the collaboration of several multicultural students at Ball State to help incoming and returning students get on track and feel more welcome at the university, Snorten said.

"Multiple student organizations will be there to meet students who are interested in getting involved in the Ball State community," Snorten said.

Multicultural Center Director Patricia Lovett said about 30 student organizations will be present at the Welcome Back Picnic.

"We hope to get more students involved in our multicultural organizations and activities and give them the opportunity to learn about their options as far as where they would like to get involved in the university," she said.

Lovett said about 230 students attend last year's picnic and she is hoping for 300 this year.

"This picnic definitely benefits the students and organizations that are trying to diversify and help students find their place," she said.
