Indianapolis-area resident dies from W. Nile virus

INDIANAPOLIS - Health officials say an Indianapolis-area resident has died from West Nile virus, the second confirmed Indiana death this year from the mosquito-borne illness.

The Marion County Public Health Department announced the death Monday. It said West Nile virus has been identified in mosquitoes in all nine townships of the county surrounding Indianapolis.

State health officials announced earlier this month an Evansville-area resident had died from West Nile. Other human cases have been identified in Allen, Fulton, Hamilton, Hancock, Jackson, Monroe and Tippecanoe counties.

State health officials said West Nile transmission within the mosquito population is higher than in previous years and that Indiana residents should take steps to protect themselves. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in at least 67 Indiana counties so far this year.
