INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana officials are preparing for a long battle with a devastating drought that could last three more months.
Indiana Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Joe Wainscott said Wednesday that dealing with the drought will be a "marathon, not a sprint" because the National Weather Service is warning it could last until October.
Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman has added 14 counties to a disaster area. Those counties and the 11 bordering them can now apply for assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Farmers have eight months from the disaster declaration to apply for federal loans.
Authorities have asked Indiana residents to conserve as much water as possible. They've asked those using at least 100,000 gallons daily to cut back by 10 percent to 15 percent.
