Delaware County 4-H holds shows for cattle, performers; prepares for midway opening

Hundreds of Delaware County residents attended the beef and sheep shows Sunday at the Delaware County fairgrounds as part of the annual 4-H fair.

The carnival midway will begin today, but events have been taking place as early as July 7.

John Dorer, part of the managing staff for the fair, said the fair board added all new amenities this year with the expectation of attracting larger crowds.

"We've got brand new grandstands due to the issue that took place in Indianapolis last year," he said. "That's a brand new $900,000 grandstand and it seats 2,250 people."

The fairgrounds have also added a new $2,500 PA system that reaches all buildings and outdoor parts of the 65-acre plot of land.

There will be more 4-H shows over the next few days, which give new 4-H performers a chance to present their showmanship. For some this is a much-anticipated part of the year.

"It's sort of like a close knit family that you see people maybe once a year," said John Fuqua, whose grandson is showing a goat this year.

"I showed back when I was in 4-H, probably 50 years ago," he said.

Dana Peters has three children who have competed at the 4-H fair and said the showmanship aspect of the fair is important because it teaches life lessons.

A recurring theme that rang true with many of the 4-H members was the sense of family that they feel each year. Jim Glore has been taking part in the 4-H fair for years and knows generations of families involved.

"4-H is kind of a family thing and if you checked, you'd probably see grandparents that were in 4-H, their kids, their grandkids," he said. "Everybody loves doing it and the whole family gets involved."

Peters was involved since she was young and said being involved in the 4-H events was family-oriented.

"As a matter of fact, it's hard to be in 4-H without your family," she said.

She also said the fair is a positive outlet for her kids to learn life lessons and enjoy the growing 4-H community.

"I think everybody here would say it's [about] coming together with people you haven't really seen and being with friends, making friends, and hanging out," she said.
