Students provide videos for state tourism department

The Indiana Office of Tourism is featuring videos produced by Ball State students on its website.

Telecommunications, journalism and digital storytelling students travelled around the state to produce these videos.

"It's real world application," Christopher Flook, an instructor of telecommunications and adviser for the project, said. "They have a real client and have objectives by the client."

The project has been three years in the making because of limited video shooting time during the year and semester breaks.

Students enjoyed the out of classroom experience, and were able to visit several prominent Indiana towns. They shot promotional videos for the cities of Fort Wayne and Bloomington, as well as exclusive Indiana attractions like Holiday World and Conner Prairie.

"It gives you a chance to see what it would be like to work in the real world but still work on a school project," said Anna Appel, a recent telecommunications graduate. "I learned a lot about how to work with clients and about compromising with what the client wants, and I envision and combine the project to include what I like and what the client likes for their purpose."

Appel said she hopes to take the knowledge she learned about clients into her future career.

"I hope I can use what I've learned to work with clients and know how to talk with them," she said.

With the emerging media projects that Ball State offers, students are learning about the importance of immersive learning and how it can benefit them in the future.

"I really do believe in immersive learning," said Stephanie Bristow, a recent telecommunications graduate. "The way we use media today, no matter what business or industry, it's everywhere and relevant."

Travelling was what gained interest for students to participate in the media project.

"I liked that we were able to travel around the state and go to different places I probably wouldn't have gone to any other time," Appel said. "I am from here but it is cool to see different places and make videos about them and show the different tourist attractions in Indiana."

By traveling throughout the state, students learned a great deal more about Indiana than they would have otherwise.

"First and foremost, it was interesting to see how much Indiana has to offer," Bristow said. "It shows people what they can do in Indiana."

Flook said he hopes his students take what they have learned through the emerging media experience and are able to apply it to different areas of the media industry.

"I hope they take the importance of community development," he said. "There are very creative things you can do for community development. Students can take their skill set and deploy it in a very non-traditional way."

As a recent graduate, Bristow is confident her college classes and the emerging media experience will help in her first job and beyond.

"I learned how I can use my skill sets I have gained in the classroom and adapt them to many different situations," she said. "I learned that with emerging media, growth is possible."
