Mayor Dennis Tyler remains hospitalized

Mayor Dennis Tyler remains hospitalized after having surgery Thursday as the result of complications from diverticulitis.

Tyler was admitted to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and will likely remain there until sometime today, said Terri Whitt Bailey, director of the Muncie Community Development office.

Bailey said the recovery is going well and should be able to continue working later on this week.

"He's actually doing very well," Bailey said. "He's sore from his surgery but he's healing very well just as the doctors expected. Everything has gone just as it was planned."

Diverticulitis is a medical condition where the inner lining of the intestine becomes inflamed or infected. The condition occurs most often in the large intestine, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Though it is unknown what exactly causes diverticulitis, it is believed a low-fiber diet is one of the most likely causes.

Bailey said her own husband has dealt with diverticulitis and doesn't expect Tyler's condition to have long lasting effects on his health with a higher fiber diet.

Despite needing rest, Bailey said Tyler has continued working in between rest cycles while at the hospital.

Bailey said even though he is hospitalized, he is still in charge as Muncie's mayor.

"He has been [working] from his hospital bed and will continue to be able to delegate and give us direction based on the things that he feels needs to be done for the city," Bailey said. "It's been kind of amusing to see that but he's still working.

"He took the time on Friday to finish his speech that he had started and the fire chief read the speech," Bailey continued. "Today, he had a proclamation to give and I read the proclamation today. We're filling in the blanks for him the things he doesn't need to be getting up to do. But he still is doing the work and he's still supporting all the activities that he has for us."
