Ball State students compete in Miss Indiana pageant

As the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant began Saturday at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, four Ball State students and an alumna were among those competing for the crown and the title of Miss Indiana.

Courtney Jurick, Megan Thwaites, Kara Mawhorter and Samantha Rife are each competing in the pageant.

Jurick, a recent Ball State graduate with a degree in public relations, will be running as Miss Ball State, an achievement she received in January.

Thawaites, a journalism and public relations major, is running as Miss Metropolitan. Thwaites is also the first to hold that position.

Mawhorter is a speech pathology major and was crowned Miss Huntington in March. Past achievements include fourth runner up in the Miss Ball State pageant.

Rife is an acting major and is running as Miss Kankakee Valley, a title she earned in September.

The pageant's activities began Saturday with an opening reception sponsored by the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, and will conclude Saturday with the Miss Indiana Parade, Miss and Teen Contestant Autograph signing and the Miss Indiana finals at 7 p.m. at the performing arts center.

Thirty two women will be competing in the Miss Indiana category and 22 will compete in the Miss Indiana's Outstanding Teen competition.
