Seniors to learn about life after college

From today until May 5, only 18 days remain until graduation. For those seniors who may be worried about what the future might hold, informational sessions are being offered to address concerns about what comes after graduation.

The Miller College of Business and Beta Sigma Gamma honor society are hosting "Leaving College 101" today and April 25 in the Whitinger Business Building Room 144. Each session is free and lasts from 3-4 p.m.

Finance instructor Ann Reichle will speak at the sessions. Michele Bartlett, the outreach coordinator for the H.H. Gregg Center for Professional Selling, said Reichle usually teaches Finance 101, and some of what she teaches in the class will be brought up during the sessions.

"A lot of [the information] has to do with renting versus buying and things like that, and we're actually going to expand upon those because there are a lot of questions the seniors have when they get out of college," Bartlett said.

According to a press release, Reichle will discuss student loans, renting versus buying, 401ks, health care plans, claiming exemptions and creating a budget.

Senior psychology major Mike Ward said he is interested in attending this event because he needs to expand his knowledge of "real world problems."

"I currently live in a rented house, so I know how to sign a lease and look for what's on the market," he said. "But as for paying loans back, I have no idea how that works, or insurance or really much of anything outside of the few bills I pay now."

The press release said Advanced Professionalism Certificate credit is offered through these sessions. Bartlett said students will be able to have their IDs swiped if they are attending for APC credit.

Bartlett said those who are attending are encouraged to fill out an online registration form.

"It helps us so as to make sure we don't need to change our venue," she said. "It's encouraged; it's not required."

Ward said he and his friends have had conversations about the future and what it holds.

"Most of us are equally terrified and excited to graduate and move on to the real world."
