Bikes stolen near Johnson, Kinghorn

A man was arrested Sunday morning and charged with stealing student bikes, among other offenses.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., University Police Department apprehended Brian Gipson, 23, near the entrance to the H2 parking lot behind the Johnson Complex.

According to a UPD arrest report, Officer David Huff had been watching the suspect's vehicle for several hours, and believed the vehicle contained two bicycles that had been stolen from the Johnson Complex bike racks.

As Huff approached the suspect, he recognized him as the same man caught on surveillance video cutting bike locks from bikes in the Kinghorn bike room the same morning.

The man initially told Huff the 2000 Cadillac Deville that he had been driving was his mother's and it had been stolen earlier that day.

Huff questioned Gipson who later admitted to stealing five bicycles from campus.

Gipson was charged with five counts of theft, criminal trespass and driving with a suspended license. Gipson had previously been arrested for possession of stolen property.

Housing and Residence Life staff and UPD are unaware of the exact amount of bicycles that have been stolen, and are asking students with bicycles on campus to check to see if theirs was taken. UPD is encouraging students to file a report if they discover their bicycle is missing.
