Woman injured in pedestrian wreck near campus

A college-aged woman was struck by an SUV, amid pouring rain, while crossing the street at the intersection of Virginia and Bethel avenues around 10:15 p.m.

Sgt. Bruce Qualls with the Muncie Police Department said he was told the woman sustained injuries to her head and broke a few bones near her pelvis. She was taken to Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital after the crash.

Qualls said the driver was headed westbound on Bethel Avenue, and the pedestrian ran out in front of him. She was crossing the street from the north side, near Muncie Liquor Store at 1112 W. Centennial Ave., Qualls said.

He did not comment on the storm and its possible connection to the accident. Muncie was under a severe thunderstorm warning until midnight. The storm had winds of up to 60 mph, and hail was reported on the southeast side of Muncie, according to the National Weather Service.

At the scene of the crash, there was a broken beer bottle, flip flops and medical debris from the ambulance team. Qualls said he could not confirm at the time if the woman was carrying the beer bottle.

"Most of our evidence, though, has been washed away with this downpour," Qualls said. "We're not going to be able to do a whole lot with this scene because it's gone."

He was referring to possible scuff marks on the vehicle, which in the circumstances were impossible to see, given that it was dark and raining.

This, like all serious vehicle wrecks, is being treated as a crime scene, Qualls said.

Both the driver and the pedestrian will be given a blood test for possible impairment.

Delaware County was also under a tornado watch until 1 a.m. Thunderstorms are possible Saturday and again next Tuesday night through Thursday, according to the weather service.
