Students hold annual prom dress sale

High school girls were welcomed into Ball State's Alumni Center to find their perfect and affordable prom dress on Saturday.

Ball State's Fashion Merchandising Association took donations all week in preparation for the prom dress sale. The annual project Cinderella's Closet was able to offer six racks of dresses for girls to search through. FMA officer Shelley Shekell said there was a better response to the project this year.

Shekell, a sophomore public relations major, said a lot of time and effort goes into creating this successful annual project. As an officer, she was responsible for collecting donations, tagging dresses, passing out fliers and working the event. Regardless of the time, Shekell said she enjoys the response she receives from the girls.

"It's cool to get the dresses and actually look at them, and see how people respond to the dresses," she said. "You can tell that the girls actually like them and giving people a chance to get dresses that they wouldn't normally be able to afford."

FMA officer Samantha Brown agreed that this is the best response the project has received thus far. Brown, a fashion and merchandising major, said during the morning, the room was packed with girls looking at dresses.

Highland Senior High School student Jannaye Huser shopped at Cinderella's Closet for the first time. She was in search of a long, green dress. She said she liked the idea of Cinderella's Closet.

"It's a really good idea for girls who do not have much money," she said.

FMA had a goal to reach $600 this year, which would be more than they earned last year. As of Saturday, the association had received about $500.

FMA said all the raised money would go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware County.

Brown said Cinderella's Closet is an idea to benefit everyone.

"It's a lot of work to sort out the dresses, but sometimes you get some really funny ones that are really outdated, so that's kind of fun," Brown said. "Just seeing people's responses when they find a dress that they love, you know when you find that perfect dress."
