Muncie to host St. Patrick's Day parade

The Muncie community will have an opportunity to go downtown and show off their green this Saturday.

The 29th annual St. Patrick's Day parade will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the Muncie Fieldhouse. The parade will travel south on Walnut Street, east on Charles Street and north on Mulberry Street.

Cheryl Crowder, the parade organizer, said that there have been around 1,000 people in attendance in years past and more are expected this year because the event is on a weekend. According to weather.com, the high on Saturday is 70 degrees.

Crowder said the event is something that everyone should attend.

"It's a fun thing to do," she said, "It's the 29th year and it's a Muncie tradition, and it brings people into the downtown area."

Crowder said local polifticians, business owners, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and not-for-profit organizations will be among those participating in the parade.

Junior Christine Hurst, a women's studies major, is a member of the Cornfed Derby Dames and is participating in the St. Patrick's Day parade.

"It is a good way for us to let the public know about us and see that we're participating in community events," Hurst said.

The team, while skating in the parade, will give out candy, pass out flyers and talk to fans.

Sue Errington, a local politician, has attended six prior parades and will participate again this year.

Errington is running for the Indiana House of Representatives District 44.

"It's a good way to meet a lot of voters and their children," she said. "It's the first really big public event of the campaign season. I'll be walking it so I can shake hands."

Errington said it is also a good opportunity to come out to enjoy the nice weather.

Hurst added the parade will provide a chance for Ball State to connect with Muncie.

"I think its a good way for students to see different groups from the community and the university and get information about them," Hurst said.
