LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A letter defending Tyler Sanders

I am writing to defend Tyler Sanders, the incoming secretary of justice of the Student Government Association, against the unfair and anonymous criticism he received in last week's article about the new SGA cabinet.

The article stated that Sanders had allegedly made negative statements about SGA in the past, and that these statements were causing concern among some senators. Regardless of whether Tyler actually made these statements, I believe that the concern the senators have is misplaced.

Chris Wilkey did not run for president of SGA because he thought the organization was perfect. He ran because he knew what SGA can and should be, and he wanted to see it reach its potential. His platform and campaign reflected this goal, and he surrounded himself with running mates and staff members - including Tyler and myself - that share his desire to bring a positive change to SGA. Clearly, the students agreed with this vision of a better, different SGA, as nearly 57 percent of voters cast their vote for Alliance.

As he put together his executive cabinet, Chris continued to seek out capable students to help him bring about the changes that the voters sought. Tyler Sanders should be one of these students. The leadership skills that he will bring to the Cabinet are impressive. His intentions for the position of secretary of justice are good, and his commitment to helping Alliance carry out their platform is true. I hope that the senators will see this, and give Tyler, Chris, and the rest of the Alliance slate and cabinet a chance before voicing such criticism.
