Businesses, others participate in St. Patrick's Day parade

People of all ages stood in the streets as the floats passed by, watching local businesses, politicians and community organizations advertise their groups and celebrate the holiday.

Muncie resident Allen Lopez said he came to the parade just to watch. He said he especially enjoyed seeing the children rush out into the street to collect candy.

Lopez said he thinks the weather contributed to what was a great turnout to the parade, and said he's sure there's a little Irish blood somewhere in his ancestry.

"I think everyone's part Irish on St. Patrick's Day," Lopez said.

Afternoon skies that threatened storms cleared of clouds and let the sun light up the streets of downtown Muncie Saturday night as families and friends gathered to watch and participate in the city's annual St. Patrick's Day parade.

"It was just a nice day and we decided to come," said Della Zimmerman, a resident of Cowan, an unincorporated town on the southern outskirts of Muncie. "We hadn't been to one [a parade] for years. It's usually cold."

Monica Davis, a grandmother from Selma, Ind., agreed.

"I've never know it to be this warm on St. Patrick's Day," she said.

Zimmerman said she and her husband enjoyed watching the children collect candy thrown by people in floats. She said the parade is an opportunity to see members of the community come together.
