WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State hopes for strong finish

Underclassmen playing well as year closes in on its end

A 84-76 win over Central Michigan on Sunday not only broke a three-game losing streak, it provided a bright spot in an otherwise bleak 2011-12 season for the Ball State women's basketball team.

The Cardinals will try to shine again on Wednesday night against the Broncos of Western Michigan.

Sophomore point guard Brandy Woody is coming off a career performance on Sunday, where she scored 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Woody was a key cog in securing a victory against Central Michigan, and looks to have another solid performance.

Woody started all 30 games last year for Ball State and her experience has paid off this season. Her assist/turnover ratio is up from .636 last season to .917 this season.

Coach Kelly Packard said Woody's growth over the past year has been rewarding to watch.

"She's grown up over the course of the summer and has become so much more poised," she said.

However, Woody and the rest of the team will have their hands full with Western Michigan's sophomore guard Corie Buchanan on Wednesday. Buchanan scored a career-high 21 points against Toledo on Saturday.

Freshman guard Shelbie Justice could play a role in offsetting Buchanan's impact on Wednesday if she can build off her most recent game. Justice scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting on Sunday.

After freshman guard Brittany Carter shot 0-17 on Sunday, Packard said she's her young player will bounce back this week.

"I'm not going to get down on Britt," Packard said. "She's just as capable on any night of going 4-for-4."

The Broncos are just 6-20 overall on the year, 3-10 in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan is in last place in the Western Conference, but despite their record, they lead the MAC in point differential at +13.1.

Tip-off is at Worthen Arena at 7 p.m.
