Web malfunction allows people to see images from home security cameras

Videostreams from an international home security company are available for anyone online to see, due to a flaw in the security software, Wired Magazine reported.

The company Trendnet has said it's looking into the problem and "scrambling to discover how the code was introduced."

"At this point, it seems like a coding oversight," said Zak Wood, the company's director of global marketing, in an interview with BBC.

According to Wired, Trendnet knew of the problem on Jan. 12. The company says it's looking into updating firmware, and users can find upgrades for the company's firmware at its web site.

Michael-Lee O'Brien Brockhouse, a Ball State graduate student in the Department of History, said he stumbled upon the webcame images after a friend told him about it a few days ago.

One particular feed he was watching was for a business in California. He was able to make out the phone number reflected on a window, and he actually called to let them know what was going on.

Brockhouse sent an email to the man whose business he was seeing, and he shared the message with the Daily News.

"I could not believe it when my friend told me about this yesterday," he wrote. "After investigating it for a while, I found your camera pointed at the front desk and the sun shinning on it."
