Trial date set in soldier's hazing, suicide case

WASHINGTON — The military has set a date for the first trial in the death of a young private who investigators said shot himself after weeks of hazing by soldiers in his unit in Afghanistan.

Army spokesman George Wright said Wednesday that Sgt. Travis Carden of Fowler, Ind., will go on trial April 4 in a U.S. military court in Afghanistan on charges including hazing, maltreatment and assault.

Carden and seven others are charged in the October death of 19-year-old Pvt. Danny Chen, a New Yorker of Chinese descent who investigators said suffered physical abuse, humiliation and racial slurs before his apparent suicide.

Cases against the seven others are pending.
