Students to walk a mile for charity

Members of the community and students will walk for a cure tomorrow at the event "ESA heart St. Jude: Finding a cure, one step at a time."

The Epsilon Sigma Alpha service sorority created the event. ESA is an international service organization made of traditional and collegiate chapters. Participants will walk a mile to support the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"It is the first year having this event, it is a competition between all collegiate chapters of ESA to raise money for St. Jude," Allison Tuley, publicity chair of the event , said. "St. Jude is one of my chapter's [the Phi Alpha chapter] three main philanthropies so the cause is close to our hearts."

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness in the community about St. Jude and gain more donations for the cause.

"The children that come to the hospital have rare terminal disease that does not have a known treatment or cure," Tuley said. "The families of the children do not have to pay for the services of St. Jude; the hospital works off of 100% donations."

She said it takes more than a million dollars a day to run the hospital plus the amount to fund the research.

"The donations are very important to the hospital, which is why the event is an amazing opportunity," she said.

To form the event Tuley created and distributed fliers to her entire chapter, which has more than 130 girls, and asked them to spread the word through social media.

"Word of mouth was our best option for creating buzz over the event," Tuley said. "We also created an online fund raising page on our chapter's website, where family and friends can donate to St. Jude until the end of February."

For Tuley and her sorority sisters, getting the word out about the event, as well as the fund raising page online, was the most important part, she said.

"We are only collegiate chapter in Indiana, so we have the support of all traditional chapters of ESA in Indiana," Tuley said. "We are expecting at least 100 walkers and around 100 attendees who will support the event; they all love us very much and are willing to help us."

In having this event, Tuley said she hopes it will draw attention to the need for fund raising for St. Jude.

"St. Jude is an amazing place but they need help to continue miracles," Tuley said.

The event will be in Worthern Arena. There will be a DJ, a card-making station for the children of St. Jude and long sleeve t-shirts for sale for $10.
