Student Voluntary Services accepting t-shirt donations

Students who are looking to make a difference while cleaning out their closets don't have much farther to look; Student Voluntary Services wants your shirts.

Starting collections on Monday, Student Voluntary Services will be collecting gently used t-shirts until Friday.

The organization is collecting the t-shirts in an effort to raise money for the Alternative Spring Break trip in March.

This year students will be traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to help with relief and clean up efforts in the area.

Tuscaloosa was hit with a massive tornado last April that killed at least 58 people and injured hundreds more.

Brandi Terry, senior magazine journalism and women's studies major, said the unconventional way to fundraise is something that the group has actually utilized in the past.

"We thought we would pick it back up," Terry said, "and maybe people would be interested in doing it again."

Although the organization doesn't have a specific goal as for the amount of shirts that they would like to collect, they would need around 200 or so to meet their fundraising goals.

Terry is unsure of the amount of shirts that have been collected, but estimates the number to be around 50.

She is also hoping that this fundraiser will be more successful than others that have been done in the past.

Having done other efforts such as letter campaigns to family and friends and restaurant fundraisers, Terry believes the t-shirt drive will be successful.

"You give money and you get something in return," Terry said. "So, not only do you give money to a good cause, you get a t-shirt out of it. It's a win-win."

The agency that Ball State is doing the voluntary work through charges a fee for the organization to volunteer. With the organization providing housing and meals, participants are required to pay a fee to volunteer.

The money that Student Volunteer Services is hoping to raise will pay this fee.

Students who are interested in donating t-shirts can drop them off at the Student Voluntary office located in Student Center Room. Shirts will be collected until Friday at 5 p.m.

The t-shirt sale will take place Feb. 15-16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Scramble Light.
