SGA slates establish their missions in first debate

Communication was a theme in the first of two Student Government Association debates, held from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday in Cardinal Hall A of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

About 50 students came out to watch the vice presidential and presidential candidates for the two contending slates, Alliance and Velocity, field predetermined and student-submitted questions.

Among other things, candidates were asked about their personal strengths and weaknesses, how they plan to carry out their slates' platform points, the ways in which they intend to increase school pride and student interaction with the Muncie community and how they will lead senate and interact with other student organizations.

Alliance vice-presidential candidate Heather Closson stated that Ball State's greatest asset is its student organizations. For this reason, she said if Alliance was elected it would work to make activity fairs less crowded and create a "social media hub" so students could more easily communicate with and get involved with their organizations.

"Organizations can submit their events and activities to us, things that they want people to come to, and we'll put them on Facebook and Twitter to help them increase attendance at these events," Closson said. "Every organization is so diverse in what it has to offer to the students, and I think a lot of people don't really realize that."

Velocity presidential candidate Chad Griewank said students are Ball State's greatest asset and have a lot to offer to the campus community.

"By getting involved and making a difference in not only your community, your residence hall, your organization, but in the campus as a whole, participating as a student, that is one of the best ways to better your university," Griewank said. "Without the students, Ball State wouldn't be here."

All four candidates on each slate will have the opportunity to comment during next week's debate, which will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23, also in Cardinal Hall A.
