Sophomore Tyler Merkel, Ball State's No. 1 golfer this year, won the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week award, the league announced Thursday.
The honor came after Merkel guided Ball State to the championship title in the MAC Match Play tournament held on Monday and Tuesday in Lake Jovita South Course in Florida.
Merkel shot past the competing No. 1 golfers of the other MAC teams to finish with a perfect 3-0 record in the event.
His 3-2 win over Eastern Michigan's Brian Churchill-Smith came in the final match of the tournament.
Ball State will return to practice for the next month until it plays in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on March 10-11.
